The Central Arkansas Sphinx Foundation (CASF), in conjunction with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), celebrated their kick-off Pathway to Food Security and Equity Event on Monday, August 15, 2022. The Kick-off was attended by State and City officials (Mayor Frank Scott, Jr.), and Community leaders and volunteers.
The CASF was awarded a two-year grant for approximately $650,000 to help strengthen local food projects that will provide sustainable healthy food production and economic opportunities by assisting local community gardens. Also, it will address food insecurity by promoting urban farming/conservation for individuals and groups.
“Historically underserved individuals face significant barriers in accessing USDA assistance for urban conservation and climate-smart agriculture,” said Kalven Trice, CEO of Capacity Building Consulting and Analysis, LLC. Thomas Cooper, President of CASF, stated, “This is an outstanding opportunity to partner with USDA in addressing food security and to teach urban residents about conservation and small-scale agriculture”. “The Foundation will focus on existing community gardens, while simultaneously seek to help establish new community gardens” said James Lee, CASF Program Administrator.
